Walter Payton was drafted in the first round (fourth overall) by the Chicago Bears in 1975. He held the all-time rushing record until 2002 when Emmitt Smith broke his record. He also held the single game rushing record of 275 yards until it was broken by corey Dillon in 2001. Walter Payton was the NFL MVP in 1977 and again in 1985. He retired from football after the 1987 season was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. Walter Payton's nickname was "Sweetness". Walter Payton's rookie card appeared in the 1976 Topps set.
